In For the Love of Cities, I write about the Philadelphia Love Letter project by artist Steve Powers and the Philly Mural Arts program. With the success of that project, other cities have been asking Powers to work with them. Here is his latest work in Syracuse. Note in the video how he uses a community engagement process to really understand what people love about their city. And the result is wonderful!
Apparently my home town is not too friendly. I would strongly disagree. Interesting thing about the list is that all of the 'unfriendly' cities are tourist heavy cities. Part of the challenge with tourist based experiences is that one grumpy local can completely taint a visitor's experience. Yet the fact that all of these cities remain tourist destinations indicates that the vast majority of people have positive experiences when they visit.
Travel + Leisure put together their 2015 list of the World's Unfriendliest Cities and THREE Florida cities make the list.
Positive trend for the Rust Belt. I think it has a lot to do with a sense of opportunity in these cities and feeling like you can make a difference.
Cities like Pittsburgh and Detroit are attracting more highly educated people.
Last week's look back at Hurricane Katrina got me thinking about the unique role that we as citizens play in making and rebuilding our cities.
